Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee: Climate adaptation and emergency response

Committee hears from witnesses

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee will take oral evidence on how the UK can adapt to climate impacts and strengthen emergency response systems. This inquiry examines the readiness of farming, food production, and rural communities to handle climate-related shocks—from floods and droughts to extreme weather—and whether government preparedness matches the scale of future risks.

Climate adaptation is no longer theoretical: extreme weather already disrupts food supply chains, damages agricultural land, and strains emergency services. This inquiry will assess whether current policies and emergency procedures protect rural livelihoods and food security, or whether major gaps remain. Its findings will shape how prepared the UK is for climate impacts over the next decade.
