Select Committee chair elections
This is the annual election of chairs for Commons Select Committees, scheduled for April 2026. Select Committee chairs are elected by MPs and hold significant responsibility for scrutinising government departments and policy areas. The motion is being sponsored by Sir Alan Campbell, a senior Labour MP.
Select Committee chair elections are procedural but important for parliamentary oversight. The chairs elected will lead scrutiny of government on major policy areas including health, defence, and economic policy. The outcome reflects the balance of power in Parliament and which MPs have the confidence of their peers to hold ministers to account.
