Two-borough London seat, Labour-held, locally contested
Southgate and Wood Green is a north London seat that straddles two boroughs, drawn on the 2023 boundaries and home to roughly 138,000 people. The Enfield portion is the larger, accounting for just under three-fifths of the seat, with the Haringey portion making up the remainder; there is no single dominant town so much as a continuous suburban grain running south from Cockfosters towards Wood Green. It is a relatively young and well-educated electorate, with a median age of 38 and more than two in five residents holding a degree. Local services are split between two London borough authorities, Enfield and Haringey, a division that matters for how the area is governed.
That split shapes the politics. Across the most recent round of ward contests in May 2026, the Conservatives took the largest share of wards, with Labour and the Greens close behind, leaving no party with a commanding local position. The parliamentary picture is far less even: Labour won the seat comfortably at its first outing in 2024, taking just over half the vote against a Conservative runner-up on under a fifth, a margin of more than thirty points. Bambos Charalambous, Labour and the member here since 2017, holds the seat against that backdrop, his recent contributions weighted towards health, the economy and social care.
For now the seat looks safe at Westminster even as its ward map fragments, and recent local coverage has been broadly administrative in character, centred on council leadership and budgets rather than controversy. The crime profile is the sharper note, with theft from the person and vehicle crime appearing to run well above the comparable average, alongside elevated shoplifting and drug offences. The standing position is a secure Labour parliamentary seat sitting over a genuinely contested patchwork of local government.
Ward-level direction-of-travel: who controls what, who flipped recently, who holds the line. Each ward links to the council that runs it.
